“Life isn’t about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself”.George Bernard Shaw
Landing on this blog and probably having heard of “that girl”, you may wonder who she is and why there are plenty of videos, articles and blog entries like this one that’ll help you to become “that girl”. This article is going to explain what’s behind this recently often used term, where it comes from and what it has to do with your own life.
Who or what is ‘that girl’?
The ‘that girl’ phenomenon started in 2021 as a trend on Social Media, better said the platform TikTok. Referring to a specific version of a girl who gets up early, starts into her day with a healthy morning routine and has her life together, many videos of girls showing their interpretation of ‘being that girl’ went viral. Pictures like pouring milk into your freshly brewed Matcha Latte, journaling or working out in the morning thereby got linked to the expression ‘that girl’.
At this point it is important to mention that, even when the videos seem to address a similar version of what being ‘that girl’ means, it is more of a personal interpretation that defines it. This trend going viral shows that there is a need for young people (and not only girls) finding some inspiration to challenge themselves getting the best version of their selves.
Finding inspiration vs. creating yourself
This is exactly what this blog is all about. By documenting my personal journey (you can read about me, my background and my life so far here) of becoming the best version of myself, meaning “that girl” of my dreams, I want to inspire and motivate other girls (or boys – doesn’t matter) to follow their path to their dream life, including the process of becoming their best versions. Thereby it’s not crucial to take every step I took or to read every book I read. It’s also not crucial to start your day with a Matcha Latte or a workout. What’s crucial is that you see yourself for the person you already are and then start from this point while making all the changes it requires to become the version YOU (and not anybody else) have in mind to be the best version of yourself.
YOU MAY WONDER NOW “WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE ANY VERSION OF MYSELF IN MIND? HOW DO I FIND ‘THAT GIRL’ THAT CORRESPONDS TO ME?”
This is absolutely fine. You don’t need to already have the whole picture in your head. Becoming that girl is more of a process and every yet so small step is an important one. The main thing is that you start and then everything else will fall into place along the way.
LISTEN TO YOUR GUT INSTINCT
What awakens your interest?
Which habits would you like to try and then maybe integrate in your everyday life?
Which book inspires you?
Which small changes in your everyday life can you make in order to break negative circles?
If you then listened to your gut feeling, it is time to start. As George Bernard Shaw already stated, life is not about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself. And this is exactly what you are doing: creating yourself by taking step after step of the way that leads to your version of “that girl”.
Isn’t there a lot of pressure while becoming the best version of myself?
When there’s a new trend there’s always some critique on it, too. Within the last months, critics did not only see the positive in people inspiring each other to become a better version of their selves. Especially in times like these, where mental health gets put into focus more and more, it is crucial to maintain the health of one’s mind by not putting too much pressure on people in any regards. The “that girl” trend is said to be inspirational on the one hand, but there are a lot of people thinking that this creation of “a better self” only ends in pressure, self doubt and the feeling having to compete with unrealistic pictures being drawn by Social Media.
BUT WHAT IF BECOMING ‘THAT GIRL’, MEANING THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF, EXACTLY IS THE KEY TO HAPPINESS AND MENTAL HEALTH?
Being that girl has nothing to do with a certain picture Social Media paint. You can of course find inspiration in it but in the end it’s all about you. Your interest. Your habits. Your goals. Your dream life. And your best version of yourself. Knowing that this transition is a life-long process, it is okay to take baby steps. You don’t have to wake up at 5am. You don’t have to workout early. You’re still aloud to choose coffee over Matcha Latte and you don’t have to follow the example of “those girls” on TikTok. There will be good days and there will be bad days. The most important thing is consistency. Feeling that inner will of wanting to grow. Of wanting to inspire others by telling your journey. Of creating a life you can’t wait to wake up to. This is what becoming that girl is all about. All content around this trend and especially this blog more should serve you as a big pool of inspiration from which you can pick the pieces you can relate to or want to learn from.
